"My Old Man" is by Joni Mitchell from her 1971 release "Blue." The reason why I did an exact transcription of this song for piano is somewhat amusing. In 2014 I was doing a solo piano gig in the lobby
of a downtown Toronto hotel, The Shangrila. There is a beautiful natural wood finished Fazioli piano there, and the owner is a huge Joni Mitchell fan. Engraved into the underside of the lid, are the words in the first verse of "My Old Man." (My old man he's a singer in the park etc) The inside of the piano is also signed by Joni. After playing a few gigs there, I thought it would be nice to play that song, so I transcribed it, note for note, incorporating the melody into Joni's piano playing. The next time I played there, I did the song and waited for some reaction, at least from the staff. No one looked or noticed anything. On my break, I even asked the manager if he noticed; he didn't notice and confessed he'd never heard of the song. So much for audience participation. Anyways, it's a beautiful song, well suited for the piano, written for her lover at the time, Graham Nash.
